Want to manage your own money? Trying to grow your nest egg as fast as possible to retire early? Considering a strategy that will let you live off your investments now?

Whatever the situation, if you’re interested in managing your own investments, what you need most is good information. Even if all you want to do is keep track of what the professional money managers are doing with the money in your mutual funds, you’ve got to have good information. If you are trying to actively trade stocks, options, mutual funds or other securities on a day trading basis, solid information becomes even more critical.

The best strategy for many people is “buy and hold,” which basically consists of purchasing solid investments, usually mutual funds, on a regular basis without regard to market fluctuations and simply holding them for 20-40 years until retirement. So-called “market timing” is discouraged by most experts because of the difficulty in picking actual bottoms and peaks in market values. But if you want to maximize returns so you don’t have to wait 30 years to enjoy your money, buy and hold just won’t cut it, unless you luck into buying a Microsoft in an IPO.

Fortunately, you don’t need to pick the absolute bottom to add a lot to your bottom line. In the latest economic cycle, the stock market fell over 20% between last year and now. Buying as the downtrend started on a dollar cost averaging plan would have left your portfolio a little less than 20% short now. The market may still fall further, but buying now still beats buying in October of last year by double digits. But following the economic indicators and daily economic news would have given you the information you needed to see that the market was heading into a downtrend so you could hold off your purchases.

The Viking Horned helmet is one of the most popular and famous medieval helmets ever to come to a collector’s shelf.  The highly recognizable horns coming out from the top of the helmet makes it very prominent and memorable.  Many movies (and even a pro football team) have shown off this helmet, so you may be wondering if this helmet is historically accurate and buyable.  Even a pro football team, the Minnesota Vikings, have the Viking as their team mascot and name.  You’ll see many fans wearing the Viking helmet.  But are these real?  Or is it a myth?  What about other types of Viking helmets?

The Vikings were a Scandinavian people who came out of present day Norway, Sweden, and that whole area in Northern Europe.  They stared raiding and expanding their territory in the late 8th century ad and into the 11th century.  They were famed for the long boats which cut through water and were very fast.  They were also were said to have heads of dragons carved in the bow of the ship to intimidate the enemy as they landed near shore.  The viking warriors were the terror of the early medieval ages.  Raiding Great Britain and many villages in northern Europe spread their reputation as killings, stealers, and pillagers.  Even modern day Canada felt their terror.

But what of their helmets? Did Viking helmets really have horns jetting out from the sides?  The quick answer to that is probably not, at least not when they went into battle.  Horns would have been a great detriment to the warrior, as the enemy could grab and through them around more easily.  However, horns may have been worn ceremoniously in religious festivals or for special events.  However, these myths came out probably because the Viking warriors were so effective and intimidating, that adding horns to their helmets would make them look even more terrible.

iPhone Availability

Because of the high demand for this device, one of the most asked questions people are presently asking about is what is the iPhone availability? In other words, how easy it is to find and buy an iPhone and what retail stores and outlets offer them?

The majority of people who smoke try to give up their smoking habit at one time or another. Everyone these days is very well aware that smoking is a serious long-term risk to a smoker’s health. And if living a longer life is not enough incentive for a smoker to make the effort to stop smoking completely, then there are always the financial and social incentives.

Most western countries impose high taxation on cigarettes and tobacco products with two main aims. Firstly, to raise as much money as possible from what is essentially a drug addiction; and secondly to make smokers give up their habit because it costs so much. A heavy smoker easily spends around $3000 each year in a high taxation country such as the UK. The current economic downturn in the USA, UK and Europe means that many smokers are forced to quit smoking (or at the very least cut down) to be able to afford the large recent increases in food, petrol, heating plus rent or mortgage costs.

Socially, cigarette smoking is no longer considered an acceptable practice. Legislation has been passed in most developed countries that severely restricts where smokers can indulge their habit. Just about all restaurants, bars, public transport, hire cars, public buildings and workplaces are completely smoke-free.

All of these factors now mean that more smokers than ever are seeking help to quit smoking. There are numerous stop smoking products available (such as nicotine patches and gum) as well as various stop smoking programs.

These programs are usually run by health authorities, doctor’s surgeries and hospitals, and have a very high success rate in helping even the most addicted smoker give up their habit.

All my close friends are so jealous. I am one of those girls who is always the bridesmaid, but never the bride. Well, ever since I met Steve, everything has changed. And from his marriage proposal eight months ago, I have been on cloud nine, literally.

It was really tough decision, but I have finally decided on my Maid of Honor. Along with a big number of bridesmaids. Steve thinks is a little too many because he does not have too many close friends, but I assured him that an imbalance of bridesmaids and groomsmen in a wedding is no big deal these days. Just around the corner are a bunch of details that I need to take care of. Items such as the wedding cake, the wedding toast and song, and of course wedding bridesmaid gifts for my closest friends.

Trying to decide on bridesmaid gifts is somewhat like picking your favorite jellybean. The all look great but I don’t know which one to choose. Thankfully I found a bunch of highly informative writing articles that was steering me in the right direction when I need to choose my bridesmaids gifts. I am leaning toward personalized bridal jewelry, or personalized bathrobe. I think that will be something that you can use every day and always think of me and my Big Day. I have been pushing Steve to get started on thinking about gifts for his best man and also groomsmen gifts. But, like most guys, he tends to procrastinate a bit. That will be something when we get married that I would have to change.

When really great movies come out on video, you know you have to buy them right away. You want to add them to your movie library. You could go to store and buy dvds for $20 each, or you could rip them from a friend who already has them for free. Sound tempting? A lot of people think so. However, burning copies of movies to distribute (otherwise known loosely as sharing) is illegal.

Furthermore, it hurts the movie makers because they are not making back the money that they invested to make the movie. So while you think you’re enjoying the movie they made by having your own ripped copy, you’re actually just driving up and coming movie makers out of business. So next time you see dvd movies that you really like, why don’t you show the movie maker your support and buy a copy legally? Then they’ll stay in business to make more films that you enjoy watching.

My children (both teenagers) love to play dvd movies at home. In fact, we only go to the cinema a few times a year, whereas we usually buy or rent dvd movies. For the price you would pay for three cinema tickets, we can rent several movies for the weekend, or buy a few for our home collection.

Also, by making our own popcorn at home, it’s an even bigger savings, which is especially nice with the economy being the way it is. Also, each family member is able to choose one or sometimes even two movies (if we’re renting them) rather than just going to see one movie. I’m thinking about picking up a blue ray dvd player and since everyone has a choice, it’s not like at the cinema where each of us might occasionally go to separate movies, so we’re spending quality family time together.

Well, I’m going to tell you about the latest adventure of one of my best and longest time friends. I’m not going to give his real name -let’s just call him Bud. I will tell you that Bud is a senior citizen like myself and is known to have occasional episodes of crazy behavior - pretty much like all of us old folks.

The thing is that Bud recently came in to a fair amount of money. (That’s a great story in itself as he received almost 2 million dollars for an 850 square foot house that his parents had bought about 65 years ago for less than $5000). Anyway, Bud got this money and decided he wanted to buy a used luxury motor yacht - said he had always wanted one. He won’t admit it but I think a good part of his desire was based on jealousy over the fact that I have owned a yacht for many years although my yacht is a 22 foot open fisherman that many people would probably make a point of telling me is not really a yacht - but what do they know?

The point is that Bud quickly found out that buying a yacht took a lot more time and attention to details than just going down to the corner to buy a used car. After spending a few months getting the proverbial run-around from a number of yacht sellers who he quickly discovered were every bit as snaky as the average used car seller, Bud found a guy named Steve Jackson that had been in the boating and yacht business for almost 40 years and agreed to help bud find some luxury motor yachts for sale that might fit his needs and his budget

PS-I hope none of you were effected by the tropical storm Edouard recently as I was here in Houston which has made trying to find a Houston TX roofing contractor almost impossible.

Asphalt may not seem the most obvious material to be a major source of solar power, but anybody who has touched the surface of a road with their bare feet during summer knows only too well that it has superb heat retention. Researchers in both the UK and US have been looking into the potential - with promising results.

The idea of asphalt for solar power isn’t particularly new - the theory was first conceived a decade ago, although its only been fully realized in the last couple of years. In 2007, a Dutch engineering company began siphoning the heat from asphalt to heat several homes and offices, as well as an aircraft hanger. The system used a network of plastic pipes through which the asphalt heated the cold water and channeled it into underground containers where it was kept hot until needed.

More recently, researchers at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) have conducted tests using actual pieces of asphalt as well as computer models. The scientists found that hot water created by an asphalt energy system could be used to generate electricity by being passed through a thermoelectric generator. Heated asphalt can also heat buildings by the method of passing the water through pipes under the asphalt - just as the Dutch team had revealed.

The team also found that the maximum temperatures were found just a few inches below the road surface. Ideally, a heat exchanger would be positioned there so that the maximum amount of energy could be produced. And other measures such as applying a reflection reducing paint to the asphalt; or adding aggregates known for their conductive properties would also increase efficiency.

Asphalt has several advantages as a source of solar power. It’s a huge infrastructure that is already in place - in the United States for example, there are an probable four million miles of asphalt road surface. In general, asphalt is removed and the roads are resurfaced every decade or so; this would provide the opportunity to put in the necessary equipment with minimal expense.

Asphalt also retains its heat after the sun has gone down - giving it an advantage over solar panels. Removing the heat from asphalt can actually reduce the temperature of the road surface too - making towns and cities cooler during hot weather. And unlike solar panels, which are all too visible, practically all the asphalt collection equipment would be buried under the groundunderground.

Fascinating though these results are, don’t expect to see the widespread use of asphalt solar power any time soon. It may be many years before a system of pipes under the roads is able to provide energy - but at least it’s a step in the right direction.
