In reality, the majority site owners want to learn how to rank high in Google and the supplementary search portals. To do this you’ll either need to learn SEO (search engine optimization) or bring in a geek to do it for you.
Search engine optimization sounds like a formidable thing to get the hang of and while the rabbit hole does run very deep with what seems like bottomless complexities, it’s actually quite easy to get a grasp of the basics.
As it happens the basics are all you need to get your website ascending up into the higher positions of the SERPS (search engine results pages) with all the advantages that brings.
Any high ranking webmaster will tell you that a dominant placement on Google can completely flood your site with people all champing at the bit to find out what you can offer them. To achieve this we all have to learn how to rank high in Google.
After you’re ranking high in Google the other search engines commonly follow suit, which is a welcome bonus.
The down and dirty details are beyond the scope of this feature but at its most elementary it comes down to two preeminent factors.
1. On page optimization.
2. Off page optimization.
While #1 is important it is the off page jobs you do which will surely improve your rankings. Off page optimization really boils down to attaining links from third party web sites.
The engines regard a link from one page to another as a vote. The more links which point at a page the more popular that page is assumed to be and the SERP position rises. Granted that is a very simplified analysis but it’s the essence of ranking.
There are all kinds of different varieties of link. Some deliver the goods much better than others for ranking purposes. The very best links you can get your hands on are in-context plain text links which are rich in anchor text. Sound complicated? It’s not.
